The SMARTy Pants Method with Lanette Pottle

Are you always stressed and aren't able to enjoy the benefits of entrepreneurship? If so, then Lanette Pottle of Positivity Lady Enterprises' SMARTy Pants Method is for you!

Recently, I conducted a Q & A with Lanette about her business and how SMARTy Pants goals can help our fellow entrepreneurs. See what she had to share and let me know what you think about her approach in the comments!

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your business! Who do you serve and how do you help them?

I empower ambitious women to stress less, achieve more, and take time to savor life's juicy goodness. I primarily use online courses, and in-person workshops & retreats to accomplish this, as well as working with a few coaching clients.

The name of my business is Positivity Lady Enterprises. I have lots of fun titles: Facilitator of Breakthroughs. Champion of Dreams. Passionate Success Innovator. But truth be told, the title I wear most proudly is ‘Overcomer'.

I've gotten where I am today by overcoming some pretty challenging circumstances: growing up the daughter of an alcoholic mother, becoming pregnant at 17, a cycle unhealthy relationships, multiple financial hardships, being evicted from my home, and a less than friendly divorce, to name a few.

My professional background is in the human resources, hospitality management, and customer experience fields, but I am a learning-junkie, a life-long learner. I'm fascinated by the field of personal development. I've immersed — and invested — myself in my own personal growth journey. I've learned from legends like Jack Canfield, Brendon Burchard, Les Brown, Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, and Oprah Winfrey as well as from rising digital gurus like Kimra Luna and Nathalie Lussier.

2. You have a slightly different take on the concept of setting “SMART” goals. Tell us a little bit about your approach and how you came to develop this system.

SMART goals have been around since the 80's and like the lion and tin man (from the Wizard of Oz), they lack courage and heart. They do serve a purpose but only as a foundation, not the entire blueprint.

When I created the SMARTy Pants method I added really important details to the process, like getting in-tune with our motivation behind the goals we are setting. Another critically important element is that we apply the principles to all eight of the major areas our lives, and then ensure there is positive alignment in each so we aren't inadvertently sabotaging ourselves and our desired outcomes.

While we do work on creating goals that are specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and time-bound, we change the filter on how we are viewing things. With SMARTy Pants we redefine ‘realistic' and we shift the majority of our focus from goal setting to goal achieving and the mindset required to get there. We step back and look at the big picture of the life we are trying to create.

3. What sort of an impact does setting SMARTy Pants goals have on an entrepreneur's life? Can you share an example of the transformation some of your students have seen by using these methods?

As an entrepreneur, I know how easy it is to become consumed by our work and professional goals. We are passionate about what we do and a lot of the time it doesn't even feel like work because we love it so much. There is always something new to learn — the next best tool or gadget or app we MUST have to be successful. We're trying to balance building our business with working our business.

It's easy to over-commit ourselves professionally and then try to squeeze in all the other important aspects of our lives — relationships with others and our own health & wellness; we throw those things on auto-pilot and hope for the best.

And the truth is, this might work for us in the short term, but it's a recipe for long-term disaster.

We can't ignore our health & wellness for any length of time and not suffer the consequences. Soaring stress levels, lack of patience, headaches, debilitating illness.

We can't leave our friends, families, and romantic relationships to fend for themselves. If we do, one day we are going to wake up and they're no longer going to be there for us.

The beauty and value of using the SMARTy Pants method is it allows you the time and space to nurture yourself so you can more meaningfully grow your relationships AND your business.

This is the most significant & consistent result I am seeing. Women who are embarking on adventure, doing things that make them feel fully alive and rejuvenated, and who are rewarding their effort — not just outcomes. They are experiencing the rewards of treating themselves like the priority they are and in turn it is positively impacting their businesses and relationships.

4. Do you have a free resource you'd like to share with everyone?

One great resource I offer is Positive Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Network (PWPEN). It's a free group where I host regular webinars on topics of interest and share thought-provoking content. I like to say, “It's the place where business meets positivity and energizing connections are made.” I'd also encourage people to check out my blog and follow me on social media as well as being on the look-out for the re-release of my free mini-course, Goal Achieving Made Easy.

5. Let us know us know the best way to connect with you online!

You can find me on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest under the handle positivitylady. And you can find my blog — and snag an invitation to join PWPEN — on my website: www.lanettepottle.com

  1. I love the idea of thinking about your motivation BEHIND the goals, I often set goals that are “shoulds” but when I’m not personally connected to them, they are easy to ignore.
