Let’s Get Social – featuring Katy Martin
Welcome back for another week of Let's Get Social, where I feature a different entrepreneur every Sunday!
This week I am featuring Katy Martin. Don't forget – if you or someone you know can help out the featured entrepreneur with their area of need (see question #4), be sure to leave a comment! Also, if you would like to be the next entrepreneur featured, learn how at the end of this post. Enjoy!
Q&A Time – featuring Katy:
If you were a superhero, what would your super power be?
I would have the power to teleport. If I never had to get on an airplane (especially with little kiddos) again, I would be happy. If I could pop home to Australia for dinner with my parents any ol' time I want, I'd be really happy. My super hero powers wouldn't be changing the world, I know, but my family would be happy, and that's all one can really ask for!
What song do you crank up when you need a boost, or are celebrating a business victory?
It's less about the lyrics and more about the crazy, creative, unusual energy. It's the kind of song that motivates me to dance like no one is watching. Bjork is one-of-a-kind. She's supremely original, effervescent, and quirky. This song reminds me that it's ok – perhaps even powerful – to be just be me.
What's the best book you've read this year? (Business or fiction)
With a toddler in tow, I'm on the parenting book train right now. I recently read, “French Kids Eat Everything
” and really enjoyed it, not only because I'm a bit of a Francofile, but because the French foodie lifestyle is actually a delightful “diet” plan for everyday life. They don't snack or eat at their desks (and hey, we all know that's a good idea); they don't eat in their cars (and hence no baguette crumbs everywhere); they sit down to meals with white linens and make it a special event. Throw in some French cheese and wine and I'm in!
I love to play business matchmaker. What area of your business could you use help with, in case the Socially Aligned audience or I can hook you up with someone?
Dreaming bigger is always a challenge. It's easy to be content with the day-to-day joys of being a business owner, and getting by simply looking after our family, and our closest clients and friends… but oh to dream of taking the world by storm and actually making those fantastical dreams a reality…
Apple or PC?
Apple all the way!
What's your favorite social media network for business?
I really only make time for Facebook. And I spend most of my time in our Support School group because I love helping the women in the group on tech and business issues, and even life conundrums at times. It's such a special, unique space. I get just as much back as I give. I feel so blessed.
What hidden talent do you have that people would be surprised to learn of?
I'm passionate about it, but my creative endeavors are all focused on design for clients. I dream of being a “real” artist one day, with an amazing, messy, desperately creative studio.
Give us the elevator pitch – what do you do and where can people find you online to connect?
I am the co-founder of Web Designer Beauty School, an online course teaching not only how to build your own website, but also how to grow your own web design business. We have built meticulously detailed tech lessons, coupled with a coach perspective. The results are a course that instills invaluable life skills, empowering students to work on their own terms.
